Since its inception nearly 40 years ago, Self Help Graphics has advanced Latino art broadly through its programming, exhibitions and outreach to diverse audiences. In addition, Self Help seeks to identify and engage young and emerging artists from the community in all aspects of its activities. It has worked with groundbreaking artistssuch as ASCO members and Carlos Almaraz Los Four, to name a few that are recognized at the national and international levels. Self Help continues to focus on training and exposure for emerging artists whether they are 8 or 80-years-old.

Lexus has partnered with Self Help Graphics & Art on an initiative art project called "Moving Expressions" that will support the center. Internationally renowned aerosol artist Jaime “Vyal” Reyes and award-winning iconic artist Patssi Valdez are working together to create an inspirational piece of art using a Lexus CT200h as their canvas. Under the working title "Art Galleries and Back Alleys", the duo has designed an art piece that will transform this CT hybrid and convey a story that resonates with the hybrid nature of the two artists' styles and speaks to the evolution of the Latino community from the surrounding East LA area as well as nationally and internationally. It's a story about art, innovation and modern luxury and it comes together in a powerful and breakthrough vision.

The night will honor artists, leaders, and philanthropists who make extraordinary contributions to Latino Art and Culture. The completed Lexus CT200h art piece will be displayed at The Self Help Graphics & Art Feria and Awards Dinner, presented by Lexus, to help raise funds for this Chicano Arts center.

About the artists:

Jaime "Vyal" Reyes has been a graffiti artist for over 20 years and is considered one of the best in Los Angeles. His work has been exhibited at museums and galleries including MOCA, and in more than 30 cities in the U.S. as well as international exhibitions in Germany, Mexico D.F., and most recently Israel and Palestine. Vyal leads a weekly workshop at Self Help Graphics & Art, teaching his techniques to youth and and mentoring young artists along the way.

Patssi Valdez is a national treasure. Raised in East Los Angeles, Patssi came up as a young artistis with the help of the Self Help Graphics & Art Center. Patssi’s vivid, dream-like, colorful work is an expression of what is important to her and is symbolic of her as an individual in a collective experience. As her talent is undeniable, she is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the National Endowment for the Arts and J. Paul Getty Trust. Her work is featured in several major collections including the National Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institution. A groundbreaking retrospective of ASCO was recently on exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as part of the Pacific Standard Time initiative. But even with all of that she finds inspiration from working with other artists like "Vyal" and participates in inspiring youth with her continued involvement with the SHGAC.

The Art of Urban Sketching is both a comprehensive guide and a showcase of location drawings by artists all around the world who draw the cities in which they live or have traveled. Authored by Gabriel Campanario, founder of the nonprofit group Urban Sketchers and a columnist for The Seattle Times.

The book is illustrated with over 600 contemporary illustrations, and includes artists' profiles and extended captions where these urban sketchers share their stories, how they work, sketching tips, and the tools behind each drawing. With sketches and observations from more than 50 cities in more than 30 countries, this book is a visual tale of urban life, culture, and artistic styles, as well as insight into various drawing techniques and mediums.

“Urban sketching allows you to see your city with new eyes every day,” says Campanario. “And when you make a habit of it, not only do you improve your drawing skills, you also gain new appreciation for the people and places around you.” He encourages others to pick up his passion for on-location drawing, saying that, "urban sketching is purely for fun -- a chance to step away from the computer and just draw for the sheer joy of it."

On March 21st, to celebrate Bach's life and music, musicians will perform Bach in subway stations throughout New York City for the entire day. They will not ask for money, but simply request that straphangers just listen and open themselves up to the power of the music.

Further celebration will occur at the Happy Birthday Bach! Concert, featuring performances by musicians from the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and a pre-concert talk by Eric Siblin, author of “The Cello Suites.” Admission is free with a suggested donation of $20 to benefit the Hôpital Sacré Couer/CRUDEM Foundation, a hospital in Milot, Haiti.

Bach in the Subways is a musical activism project by Dave Henderson dedicated to bringing live classical music to those who would not otherwise hear it. For years, he has been performing Bach’s Solo Cello Suites in the city’s subways because it is the “perfect ambassador for classical music” as “their power and beauty unfailingly inspire great appreciation, joy and deep emotion in those who hear them.” His mission with this project is to “sow the seeds for future generations of classical music lovers.”

From 1971 to 1994, Italian artist Alighiero Boetti (1940–1994) embarked on a series of projects with Afghan embroiderers, creating monumental pieces that would become some of the artist’s most iconic works. Working first in Kabul in the 1970s and then in refugee camps in Pakistan after the 1979 Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, Afghan women embroidered works based on Boetti’s templates that include: colorful grids of letters that spell out phrases (such as “Order and Disorder”); Mappe (maps), wall-sized world maps with countries filled-in with the colors and symbols of their flags; and Tutto (everything), large-scale works entirely filled with intricately embroidered shapes representing diverse objects—sunglasses, a Hindu goddess, a protractor, twins, and more.
